Joab stood with him, and Abiathar stood with him as well. Even those who held positions of military and priestly authority moved according to their own desire and calculation. So the establishing of Solomon’s kingdom was not merely a matter of protecting a throne. It was God setting right what had been disordered. God did not stop at judging sin. He did not leave the place He had torn down empty, but raised up others in it. By appointing Benaiah in place of Joab and Zadok in place of Abiathar, God showed that He was putting the sword and the altar of the kingdom back in order. This is the way of the kingdom of God. True peace is not built by covering over sin. Stability preserved while still holding on to rebellion, bloodshed, and selfish desire is not peace at all. God exposes sin and deals with it, and in doing so He establishes an order fitting for His kingdom. Judgment, therefore, is not merely an ending, but also the hand of God setting things right anew. So it is with our lives as well. The Lord does not leave untouched the places within us that are like Joab and Abiathar. He shakes the places we cling to with our own will, our own calculation, and our own desire. Then in those very places, He causes His rule to remain and restores the order of worship before Him. So the hand of God is not only a hand that tears down, but a gracious hand that saves and restores. Believers are those who, held fast by that hand, live trusting that even in seasons of breaking down, the kingdom of God is still being built. (Prayer) Lord, please set right the crooked places within me. Establish in my life the order of Your rule and worship, and lead me today to walk as one of the people of Your kingdom. Scripture records the scene in these brief words: “So David slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David.” This short verse tells us two things. One is that David’s whole life is held within this single line. From being called by God to become king of Israel, to reigning as king and then handing the throne over to Solomon, his turbulent and eventful life is gathered into this brief record. David’s life, in one phrase, was a life held fast in the hand of God. His suffering and discouragement, his joy and gladness, were all times of God’s zeal, shaping David into the man he was. He fell, he wavered, and he passed through seasons of sin and tears. Yet in the end, what was revealed through all those years was not David’s strength, but the faithfulness of God who never let him go. And because David belonged to God as one of His people, this record of his death carries the hope of heaven. To the eyes of the world, it may appear no different from any other death, but the death of a believer is not the same. It is a death that possesses the eternal life of God. Therefore, death is no longer the end. Death does not remain death, but is a death swallowed up by life. Thinking of it this way, today for you and me is a time within that life. Today, we live enjoying life, held in the hand of God; and today, we live in the hope of finally enjoying eternal life in its fullness. That is the life of a believer. So our today is life itself. A life dazzlingly beautiful. This grace is so great. (Prayer) Lord, I believe that with the same hand that held David throughout his life, You are holding me even today. That charge is a command to keep the word of the LORD and walk in His ways. If this is a father’s last word concerning a throne, how many instructions might have followed? There was so much he could have said about governing a nation, discerning people, handling war and diplomacy. Yet David sets all of that aside and gives his son this one command: keep the word of the LORD and walk in His ways. In the end, his final charge can be summed up in one phrase: keep the faith. Here we see the Bible’s understanding of “faith.” Faith is not merely intellectual agreement, as though we simply acknowledge something to be true. Faith is personal trust in the living God. And that trust always expresses itself in life. That is why Scripture reveals faith in the form of obedience, loyalty, and faithfulness. To keep the word and to walk in His ways is, in the end, a description of what the life of one who believes God looks like. But this faith is not something we generate within ourselves by our own willpower or effort. It is the faith planted within us by the Lord, the author of faith, that becomes the cause. We have already seen this in the life of Abraham, and in the life of David. Because God first called them, spoke to them, and led them, the walk of faith appeared in their lives. Therefore, obedience is not a separate assignment placed next to faith. Obedience is the result of faith; it is the fruit borne in the life of the one who trusts the Lord. So what we first need today is not to pressure ourselves, saying, “Now that I believe, I must obey.” What we need first is to look to Christ Jesus. When we look to the Lord, the author of faith, that faith appears within us as a life that keeps His word. A day that keeps the word of the LORD and walks in His ways begins not by putting forward my own resolve, but by looking to the Lord who holds me fast. (Prayer) Lord, let me always look first to Christ Jesus. Through that gaze, You work within me. You lead me to walk the steps of faith. Let today be such a day. Amen. _________________ (Daily Meditation) • 1 Kings 1:38–2:4]]> Thu, 22 Oct 2026 06:59:38 +0000 <![CDATA[2026년 10월 21일, 수요일 | 열왕기상 1:20-37]]> [한 절 묵상] 열왕기상 1:37 “또 여호와께서 내 주 왕과 함께 계심 같이 솔로몬과 함께 계셔서 그의 왕위를 내 주 다윗 왕의 왕위보다 더 크게 하시기를 원하나이다 하니라” 밧세바와 나단의 요청으로 다윗은 자신이 하나님의 이름으로 밧세바에게 했던 맹세를 다시 기억합니다. 그리고 제사장 사독과 선지자 나단을 불러 솔로몬에게 기름을 붓고, 뿔나팔을 불며 솔로몬 왕의 만세를 외치라고 하지요. 그렇게 다윗은 솔로몬을 이스라엘과 유다의 통치자로 분명히 세웁니다. 바로 그 자리에 불려온 브나야는 이렇게 고백합니다. “여호와께서 내 주 왕과 함께 계심 같이 솔로몬과 함께 계셔서.” 브나야의 이 말은 참된 왕권이 어디에서 오는지를 보여 줍니다. 왕 됨의 자격은 왕 자신에게 있지 않습니다. 세상 사람들이 모두 환호하고, 외적인 조건이 다 갖추어져 있어 보여도, 하나님이 함께하지 않으시면 그는 참된 왕이 될 수 없습니다. 반대로 하나님이 함께하시면, 그 사람이 참된 왕의 자리에 서게 됩니다. 결국 중요한 것은 사람이 얼마나 커 보이느냐가 아니라, 주님이 그와 함께하시는가이지요. 이 사실은 오늘 우리의 삶도 비추어 줍니다. 오늘 우리에게 필요한 것도 주님이 나와 함께하신다는 것을 아는 것입니다. 그리고 이 사실은 거기서 멈추지 않고, 주님이 너와도 함께하신다는 이해로 나아가지요. 그러면 우리는 서로를 함부로 판단하고 정죄하지 않습니다. 주께서 붙드시고 함께하시는 지체로 보게 됩니다. 그럴 때 비로소 이해와 용납의 사랑으로 함께 걸어갈 수 있습니다. 교회는 바로 그런 공동체입니다. 사람의 조건으로 서 있는 모임이 아니라, 주님이 함께하시는 은혜로 묶인 그리스도의 몸이지요. 그러니 오늘 우리에게 정말 필요한 것은 사람을 보는 눈보다, 주님이 함께하심을 아는 믿음입니다. 나를 향한 주님의 임재를 알고, 형제를 향한 주님의 일하심도 인정하는 것이지요. 그 믿음이 있을 때 우리는 높아지려 하지 않고, 서로를 밀어내지도 않으며, 함께 세워져 갑니다. 오늘도 주님이 함께하시는 백성답게, 사랑으로 걷는 교회 되기를 소망합니다. ]]> Wed, 21 Oct 2026 07:05:57 +0000 <![CDATA[October 21, 2026, Wednesday | 1 Kings 1:20–37]]> [One-Verse Meditation] 1 Kings 1:37 “As the LORD has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”  At the request of Bathsheba and Nathan, David remembers the oath he had made to Bathsheba in the name of God. He then calls for Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet, and commands them to anoint Solomon, to blow the trumpet, and to cry out, “Long live King Solomon!” In this way David clearly establishes Solomon as ruler over Israel and Judah. And Benaiah, summoned to that very moment, responds with these words: “As the LORD has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon.” Benaiah’s words show us where true kingship comes from. The qualification for being king does not lie in the king himself. Even if all people applaud, and even if every outward condition seems perfectly fitting, if God is not with him, he cannot be a true king. On the other hand, if God is with him, then he stands in the place of a true king. In the end, what matters is not how great a person appears, but whether the Lord is with him. This truth also sheds light on our lives today. What we need is to know that the Lord is with us. And this truth does not stop there; it leads us to understand that the Lord is with you as well. Then we no longer judge or condemn one another lightly. We begin to see one another as members whom the Lord upholds and accompanies. Only then can we truly walk together in understanding, forbearance, and love. That is the church. It is not a gathering held together by human qualifications, but the body of Christ, bound together by the grace of the Lord who is with us. So what we truly need today is not merely a sharp eye for people, but faith that knows the Lord is with us. We are to know His presence toward us, and also acknowledge His work in our brothers and sisters. When that faith is present, we do not seek to exalt ourselves, nor do we push one another away; instead, we are built up together. May we today, as a people with whom the Lord is present, become a church that walks in love. (Prayer) Lord, let me never forget that the worth and meaning of my life do not lie within me, but in the grace of Your presence with me. And help me also to see those beside me as people with whom You are present, so that I may walk with them in love. In this way, make even today a step that builds up Your body, the church. Amen. _________________ (Daily Meditation) • 1 Kings 1:20–37]]> Wed, 21 Oct 2026 07:05:04 +0000 <![CDATA[October 20, 2026, Tuesday | 1 Kings 1:1–19]]> [One-Verse Meditation] 1 Kings 1:5 “Now Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, ‘I will be king.’ And he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.” Source David now seems to have grown so old and frail that he could no longer properly attend to the affairs of the kingdom. So Adonijah, one of his sons, exalts himself and says, “I will be king.” It is a declaration that the next throne belongs to him. Scripture explains the background of his pride in this way: he was born next after Absalom, and he was very handsome. In other words, he stood next in the line of succession, and by outward appearance he seemed to have all the qualities fitting for a king. Added to this, his father David had never once rebuked him, so he likely lived with his pride fully inflated. Here again we see David’s failure in the raising of his children. In this way, Adonijah had become the widely accepted candidate for the next king. That is why Joab, the commander of the army, and Abiathar the priest also sided with him. But Nathan the prophet and others did not join them. They remembered David’s word—his oath—that Solomon was to succeed him. So Nathan, together with Bathsheba, presses that truth again upon David. That is how today’s passage ends. Here we see the perspective of Adonijah and of those who supported him, including Joab and Abiathar. They made what looked good in human eyes the standard of their judgment. Considering rank, handsome appearance, and royal favor, they concluded that Adonijah was the right choice for the throne. He was not an open rebel like Absalom, so there seemed to be no reason to oppose him. Yet they failed to reckon with the will of God, which overturns every merely human standard. What about us, then? What is the standard by which we judge our lives today? Have the things the world calls important captured our gaze? This passage sounds an alarm to us. It turns our eyes back from what the world has stolen to the Word of God. Let us think about it this morning: “What am I looking at as I live?” “What is truly precious to me?” To these questions, the Word gives a clear answer. (Prayer) Lord, let me live looking not at the world, but at You. Make this day also a life interpreted by Your Word. Amen. _________________ (Daily Meditation) 1 Kings 1:1–19]]> Tue, 20 Oct 2026 07:07:39 +0000 <![CDATA[2026년 10월 20일, 화요일 | 열왕기상 1:1-19]]> [한 절 묵상] 열왕기상 1:5 “학깃의 아들 아도니야가 스스로 높여서 이르기를 내가 왕이 되리라 하고 자기를 위하여 병거와 기병과 전배 오십 명을 준비하니” 다윗은 이제 늙어 정사를 제대로 돌보지 못할 만큼 쇠약해진 것 같습니다. 그래서 그의 아들 중 하나인 아도니야가 스스로를 이렇게 높이지요. “내가 왕이 되리라.” 그다음 왕위는 바로 자신이라는 선언입니다. 성경은 그 교만의 배경을 이렇게 말합니다. “압살롬 다음에 태어난 자요, 용모가 심히 준수한 자라.” 그러니까 왕위 계승의 다음 서열이고, 누가 보아도 왕으로 손색이 없는 준수함을 갖추었다는 말입니다. 더불어 아버지 다윗이 한 번도 그를 나무란 적이 없다고 하니, 콧대를 한껏 높이며 살았을 것입니다(6절). 우리는 여기서 또 다윗의 실패한 자녀교육을 봅니다. 그렇게 자타가 공인하는 차기 왕권 주자가 아도니야였습니다. 그래서 군대를 이끄는 요압도, 제사장 아비아달도 그와 뜻을 같이하지요. 그러나 선지자 나단을 비롯한 사람들은 이에 동참하지 않습니다. 후계로 솔로몬을 언급한 다윗의 말, 곧 그의 맹세를 기억했기 때문입니다. 그래서 나단은 밧세바와 함께 그 사실을 다윗에게 다시 각인시킵니다. 오늘 본문은 그렇게 끝이 납니다. 우리는 여기서 아도니야와 그를 지지한 요압과 아비아달을 비롯한 사람들의 시각을 봅니다. 그들은 사람의 눈에 좋아 보이는 것을 삶의 판단 기준으로 삼았지요. 다음 서열, 준수한 용모, 왕의 총애 등을 고려해 보니 차기 왕위는 아도니야가 적합하다고 여긴 것입니다. 그는 압살롬처럼 대놓고 반역한 자도 아니었으니 반대할 이유가 없어 보였겠지요. 그러나 그들은 이 모든 기준을 뒤엎으실 하나님의 뜻은 염두에 두지 않았습니다. 그러면 우리는 어떠한가요? 오늘 우리 삶의 판단 기준은 무엇인가요? 세상이 중요하다고 말하는 것들이 우리의 시선을 붙들고 있지는 않은가요? 본문의 말씀은 이런 우리에게 경종을 울립니다. 세상에 빼앗긴 우리의 시선을 다시 말씀 앞으로 옮기게 하지요. 이 아침에 함께 생각해 봅시다. “나는 무엇을 보며 사는가?” “내게 참으로 소중한 것은 무엇인가?” 우리의 이 질문에 말씀은 분명히 답하십니다. Then the LORD heard the prayer for the land, and the plague upon Israel was stopped.” Through David’s sin, God judges Israel. Yet this sin was not merely David’s problem alone. His sin also exposed the condition of Israel, which had been relying on something other than God. Now, through the prophet Gad, God tells David to choose one of three judgments. Even in great distress, David makes a wise decision. He entrusts himself to the hand of the LORD. And he gives this reason: “For his mercy is great.” That mercy of the LORD is revealed in David’s repentance. David kneels before the Lord and says, “Please let your hand be against me and against my father’s house.” In this way, God’s mercy appears through the repentance of His people and through a love that gives oneself up. Then the Lord tells David to build an altar—on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. When David offers burnt offerings and peace offerings there to the LORD, the Lord hears the prayer for the land and stops the plague of judgment. Thus 2 Samuel comes to its close in the mercy of God. This threshing floor later becomes the site of the temple in Jerusalem. David spoke of that place, saying, “This shall be the house of the LORD God and here the altar of burnt offering for Israel.” And Solomon began to build the temple there, on the threshing floor of the Jebusite. So the temple in Jerusalem was a place where the LORD’s mercy was shown over Israel’s sin. Scripture tells us, “Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” Because of Christ Jesus. And so, in Christ, we live as those who have become a place where the mercy of God rests. Therefore, our days are not simply a chain of accidental moments, but days guarded and built up by the mercy of God. (Prayer) Lord, Your word makes me know that my life is a place where Your mercy rests. Today also, let me walk in gratitude and worship without forgetting that grace, so that my life may exalt Your name. Amen. ________________ (Daily Meditation) • 2 Samuel 24:14–25]]> Mon, 19 Oct 2026 07:43:03 +0000 <![CDATA[2026년 10월 19일, 월요일 | 사무엘하 24:14-25]]> [한 절 묵상] 사무엘하 24:25 “다윗이 거기 여호와를 위하여 제단을 쌓고 번제와 화목제를 드렸더니 이에 여호와께서 그 땅을 위한 기도를 들으시매 이스라엘에게 내리는 재앙이 그쳤더라” 다윗의 범죄로 하나님은 이스라엘을 심판하십니다. 그러나 그 범죄는 다윗 한 사람의 문제만은 아니었지요. 그의 죄는 하나님이 아닌 것을 의지하던 이스라엘의 모습을 함께 드러냈습니다. 이제 하나님은 선지자 갓을 통해 다윗에게 세 가지 징벌 가운데 하나를 택하라고 하십니다. 다윗은 큰 곤혹 가운데서도 현명한 결정을 하지요. 여호와의 손에 자신을 맡기겠다고 합니다. 그리고 그 이유를 이렇게 말합니다. “여호와께서는 긍휼이 크시니.” 그 여호와의 긍휼은 다윗의 회개 가운데 드러납니다. 다윗은 주님 앞에 무릎 꿇고 말하지요. “청하건대 주의 손으로 나와 내 아버지의 집을 치소서.” 하나님의 긍휼은 이렇게 성도의 회개와 자신을 내어놓는 사랑으로 나타납니다. 그리고 주님은 그런 다윗에게 제단을 쌓으라고 하시네요. 여부스 사람 아라우나의 타작마당에서 말입니다. 다윗이 그곳에서 여호와께 번제와 화목제를 드리자, 주님은 그 땅을 위한 기도를 들으시고 심판의 재앙을 그치십니다. 그렇게 사무엘하는 하나님의 긍휼 가운데 마쳐집니다. 이 타작마당은 훗날 예루살렘 성전 터가 됩니다. 다윗은 그 자리를 두고 “이는 여호와 하나님의 성전이요 이는 이스라엘의 번제단이라”라고 말했고, 솔로몬은 바로 그곳, 곧 여부스 사람의 타작마당에 성전을 건축하기 시작했습니다. 그러니 예루살렘 성전은 이스라엘의 죄 위에 여호와의 긍휼이 베풀어진 자리입니다. 성경은 우리를 향해 “전에는 긍휼을 얻지 못하였더니 이제는 긍휼을 얻은 자니라”라고 말씀합니다. 그리스도 예수 때문에요. 그렇게 그리스도 안에서 우리는 하나님의 긍휼이 머무는 자리로 살아갑니다. 그러므로 우리의 하루는 우연히 이어지는 시간이 아니라, 하나님의 긍휼로 지켜지고 세워지는 날들입니다.
