https://21cmc.org 복음으로 사는 사람들 [One-Verse Meditation] Judges 20:18 (NIV) "The Israelites went up to Bethel and inquired of God. They asked, ‘Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Benjamites?’ The LORD answered, ‘Judah is to go first.’" [Meditation] Receiving the desecrated body of the concubine, all Israel rises up in anger. They decide for themselves to punish the tribe of Benjamin for this terrible evil. Of course, their anger seems righteous. However, a look at the whole text reveals that all the characters in this story—the Levite's 'I,' Benjamin's 'our side,' and all Israel's 'we'—are deeply mired in the sin of 'self-righteousness.' What was the sin of all Israel? They went to God and prayed, but their question was not, "Lord, should we go to this war?" Having already passed judgment themselves, they only asked God for the tactical order: "Who of us is to go up first to fight?" This shows they were possessed by a proud self-assurance that their anger and decision were God's will. 'We are different,' they thought. They too were a people 'without a king.' This is the very image of us trying to take the speck out of another's eye while failing to see the log in our own. When we are full of our own righteousness, we don't ask for God's will but rather seek His approval for our own plans, as if to say, "I'm right, so God, you just need to give your stamp of approval." But God does not leave us in this state. Sometimes He uses methods we find hard to understand. He may allow our misguided zeal to proceed in order to break our pride. (Indeed, Israel suffers two crushing defeats in this war.) Through this failure, God shatters Israel's pride and enables them to see themselves not through their own eyes, but before Him. When we stand before the mirror of the Word and see the log in our own eye first, only then can we put down the sword of judgment against others and extend a hand of compassion. This is the true fruit of humility that the Holy Spirit produces in us. [Prayer] Lord, thank you for the grace of the Word that makes me see the log in my own eye first. Keep me from judging others in my own righteousness, and let me walk the path of life, loving and forgiving others with the same love You showed me on the cross. Amen. __________________ [Daily Reading] Judges 20:1-18  ]]> Wed, 03 Jun 2026 19:11:30 +0000 [한 절 묵상] 사사기 20:18 (개역개정) “이스라엘 자손이 일어나 벧엘에 올라가서 하나님께 여쭈어 이르되 우리 중에 누가 먼저 올라가서 베냐민 자손과 싸우리이까 하니 여호와께서 말씀하시되 유다가 먼저 갈지니라 하시니라” [묵상] 첩의 훼손된 시신을 받은 온 이스라엘은 분노하며 일어납니다. 그들은 이 끔찍한 악을 저지른 베냐민 지파를 징계하기로 스스로 결정하지요. 물론 그들의 분노는 정의로워 보입니다. 그러나 본문 전체를 보면, 이 이야기의 모든 등장인물, 즉 레위인의 '나', 베냐민의 '우리 편', 그리고 온 이스라엘의 '우리’, 이 모두가 '자기 의'라는 죄악에 깊이 빠져 있음을 알려 줍니다. 온 이스라엘의 죄는 무엇이었을까요? 그들은 하나님께 나아가 기도했지만, 그들의 질문은 “주님, 우리가 이 전쟁을 해야 합니까?”가 아니었습니다. 이미 심판은 자신들이 다 내려놓고, 하나님께는 “우리 중에 누가 먼저 올라가서 싸우리이까?”라며 전략적인 순서만 묻고 있었지요. 이는 자신들의 분노와 결정이 곧 하나님의 뜻이라는 교만한 자기 확신에 사로잡혀 있었음을 보여줍니다. ‘나는 다르다는 것이지요.’ 그들 역시 '왕이 없는' 백성이었습니다. 이 모습이 바로 내 눈의 들보는 보지 못한 채, 다른 사람의 눈의 티를 빼겠다고 나서는 우리의 모습과 같습니다. 나의 의로움으로 가득할 때, 우리는 하나님의 뜻을 묻기보다 내 계획에 대한 하나님의 동의를 구하게 됩니다. 내가 맞으니 하나님은 결재만하시라고요. 그러나 하나님은 이런 우리를 그대로 내버려 두지 않으십니다. 때론 우리가 이해하기 힘든 방법을 사용하기도 하시지요. 우리의 교만을 깨뜨리시기 위해 우리의 잘못된 열심을 그대로 허용하기도 하십니다. (실제로 이스라엘은 이 전쟁에서 두 번이나 참패합니다.) 하나님은 이 실패를 통해 이스라엘의 교만을 부수시고, 그들이 스스로를 보는 눈이 아닌, 하나님 앞에서 자신을 보는 눈을 갖게 하십니다. 말씀의 거울 앞에 서서 내 안의 들보를 먼저 보게 하실 때, 비로소 우리는 다른 사람을 향한 판단의 칼을 내려놓고 긍휼의 손을 내밀 수 있습니다. 그것이 성령께서 우리 안에 맺으시는 참된 겸손의 열매이지요. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, ‘Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.’" [Meditation] This scene from Judges 19 is reminiscent of the wickedness of Sodom, which God judged with fire. The same shouts that the men of Sodom directed at Lot's house are repeated here in Gibeah. "They called to Lot, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.’" (Genesis 19:5) This terrible cry, "so we can have sex with him," is a declaration that completely demolishes God's created order. For them, God no longer existed (even though they were Benjamites). This is not just about one specific sin; it shows that when we have no king, this is what we become when we forget God. Even successes and achievements that look impressive and wonderful from a worldly perspective are, if their motive is to enthrone 'oneself,' rooted in the same self-centered desire to "have sex with him." This episode makes us question our 'way of seeing.' We judge by what we see, and we either rejoice or despair. But what if our very vision is distorted? When we do not have God as our king, our eyes see the world through the lens of our own desires. We see everything as a tool and a means for 'me.' The end of that distorted vision is the destructive sin of "we can have sex with him." That is why we must return to the Word—the Word of truth that corrects our distorted vision and allows us to see the world clearly. It is so that Christ Jesus, the Word who came to this earth, may become our King. [Prayer] Lord, help me today to see myself, and to see Christ Jesus, so that I may know where I stand. And so, let this be a day of walking rightly, with the Word of God as my guide. Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah." [Meditation] Judges 19 begins with the tragic diagnosis, "In those days Israel had no king." The figure symbolizing the spiritual bankruptcy of that era was none other than a 'Levite.' He, who was supposed to be in charge of God's holiness, took a concubine according to his own desires. He abandoned his holy identity and acted 'as he saw fit.' Because he had no true king, he himself had become king. This Levite's story sounds a warning for us today, because without a king, everyone, without exception, does as they see fit. The world encourages this, promoting 'do whatever you want' as the highest value. But the Bible declares resolutely that without a king, there is ruin. It says that a life that does not have God as king is ultimately a failure and a downfall. It is precisely because of this desperate reality that God sent us a true King: Jesus Christ. He seeks out people like this Levite, makes us His own, and sits on the throne of our lives. Seeing us live this way, the world scoffs, 'Why do you live like that?' But no. This submission is true joy and genuine freedom. Therefore, the happiness we enjoy is to live while singing to the Lord who came as King. [Prayer] King Jesus, please crucify the desire of my old self to 'live as I see fit.' May I make Your will the joy and desire of my life, and may this be a day of boasting and singing of being Your people. He took the ephod, the household gods and the idol and went along with the people." [Meditation] The Danites, while plundering Micah's house of its idols and sacred objects, make a proposition to the Levite priest: will he be the priest of one man's house, or the priest of an entire tribe? This is his response: "Then the priest was glad." He "was glad," and "he took the ephod, the household gods and the idol" and went with the people of Dan. He would probably teach the law and offer sacrifices in the same way he did yesterday. Let's pause here for a moment. Whose word was the law he taught, and to whom did he offer his sacrifices? Wasn't it all just a 'golden calf' borrowing the name of 'the LORD'? What made his heart glad was not God, but better conditions and greater success. Sometimes, very rarely, I have seen pastors who seem to make a bigger church and more success the goal of their ministry. It broke my heart. But to be honest, I've had that heart in me too. When I started my church, I was joyful and happy sharing the gospel with the few members we had. But when there was little growth, my heart grew heavy. So I often prayed this kind of prayer: "Lord, I'm doing this correctly and diligently, so what is this?" I cannot cast a stone at this young Levite, because my heart was just like his. So instead, I examine my own heart. I ask what makes my heart 'glad,' and to whom my prayers, offerings, service, and worship are directed. [Prayer] Lord, help me to examine my heart honestly, and break the idols within me. I pray that today will be a day of rejoicing and delighting in God alone. [Meditation] When a young Levite looking for a place to live arrives at Micah’s house, Micah offers him the position of being his household priest. The terms were exceptional: ten shekels of silver a year, plus clothing and food. The Levite was satisfied, and Micah was also quite pleased to get a Levite priest, saying, "Now I know that the LORD will be good to me" (v. 13). Both willingly joined hands for the sake of 'my' own benefit and satisfaction. The Bible records that "Micah installed the Levite" (or, consecrated him). The Levite probably recited the law and offered sacrifices just as before. However, he was no longer holy. This was because all his religious acts were no longer for God, but to satisfy Micah who paid his wage and to fill his own stomach. His work was not good, but evil. Here, we rethink the essence of 'holiness.' Holiness is not a matter of action, of 'what you do.' Even the same worship and prayer can be judged as holy or profane based on 'in whom' it is done. To be in God is to acknowledge and enjoy His kingship in our lives. It is not being fixated on our own circumstances, but to rejoice and be glad in the LORD, the King, Himself. In other words, it is to see the fulfillment of His faithful promises in our lives. To enjoy the kingship of the Lord and to stand by His side—that is the state the Bible calls 'holiness.' [Prayer] King Jesus, I confess that I am made holy not by any act I perform, but only by being in You. Help me today to live as a holy person who rejoices not in the conditions of the world, but in Your unchanging kingship. And so, let it be a blessed day where You are fulfilled in my life. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.’" [Meditation] In a place where his eyes were gouged out, where he was reduced to a jester in a pagan temple—it was there, where all his strength and pride had crumbled, that Samson finally cried out to God, calling Him 'Sovereign LORD.' "Strengthen me just once more." This prayer holds no promise of a better tomorrow, no reward for himself. It is a prayer thoroughly in the 'present tense,' seeking for God's will to be done at this very moment. But here lies a surprising paradox of grace. This final act of obedience, offering his life to bring about Israel's deliverance, stems from the site of his most miserable failure. It was a prayer he could never have prayed when he was full of pride and boasting in his own strength. Only after losing everything, after painfully realizing his own powerlessness—that is, only after his ego was completely dead—could he finally entrust his entire life to God's power. His greatest failure became the starting point of his greatest surrender. This is the mystery of the gospel. God uses our failures to accomplish His will. In the very place where we are broken and crushed, He makes us seek His power, not our own. In this way, He leads us to a place of true obedience, where we offer ourselves completely to the Lord. Therefore, Samson's final prayer was the very scene of encountering God as He fulfilled His promise. It was a paradoxical place of gaining life by giving up life. [Prayer] Lord, may the place of my greatest failure become the place where I meet You most deeply, and may my prayer of greatest despair become the channel through which You accomplish Your greatest work. May Samson's prayer of "just once more" become my prayer today, so that this may be a blessed day of walking with You in this very moment. [Meditation] Samson, who boasted in his own strength, finally falls. He gives in to Delilah's persistent temptations, discloses the secret of his strength, and his hair is shaved off. "Not knowing that the LORD had left him" (v. 20), the source of his strength, he is captured by the Philistines. His two eyes are gouged out, and he who once carried the gates of an enemy city on his shoulders is now reduced to grinding grain like an animal in prison. But in this pitch-black despair, the Bible records a single line of hope: "But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved." This is not simply a physical description of hair growing back over time. Rather, it shows that the faithful love of God, who never gives up on His failed covenant people, is beginning to work again. Samson, through his life, betrayed God and disregarded the covenant, but God remained faithful to His promise. Through this process, God teaches Samson the true meaning of being a 'Nazirite.' He makes him realize that strength is not in his hair, but only in God. Paradoxically, the Philistines thought they knew the secret of his strength (his hair), but they never knew the real secret (God's covenant), and so they fell into pride, praising their own god. This story of Samson is our story. Even in the place of our failure, God never gives up on us. Rather, through that failure, He makes us rely not on our own strength but on God's power, and helps us realize our true identity as 'God's Nazirites'—that is, in Christ Jesus, the true Nazirite before God.
