[One-Verse Meditation]
2 Samuel 15:26
“But if he says, ‘I have no pleasure in you,’ behold, here I am, let him do to me what seems good to him.”
(Meditation)
David sets out on the road of escape with his men. Many people follow him. Zadok the priest and all the Levites also join the procession. When they come out carrying the ark of God, David stops Zadok and commands him to carry the ark back. He says that if he finds favor in the sight of God, he will see the ark and the tabernacle again.
The ark was the sign that Israel belonged to God as His people. Therefore, to have the ark with him could have seemed like a breakthrough in the crisis David was facing. But David does not use the ark for his own safety. Rather, he places himself under the will of God. So he makes this confession:
“But if he says, ‘I have no pleasure in you,’ behold, here I am, let him do to me what seems good to him.’”
“Even if not, even if it is different from what I want, I will follow the Lord’s will. For the Lord is always good.” This was David’s confession before the Lord. It is also the confession of us all.
But let us pause and think. How did this confession of faith come from David? It did not suddenly arise while everything was calm. Paradoxically, it came because of the rebellion and perversity of his beloved son Absalom. In that very place, David comes to see the bottom of his life. Therefore, this confession of faith shows us the God who turns even sin into good.
So all of our daily life is also a tool for God’s goodness. It is the pathway through which He brings forth faith and praise toward Himself. When we think about it, not one fragment of our time has ever been outside the presence of God. Not one moment has ever been outside His love. Therefore, if we were to describe your life and mine in one phrase, it would be this: “the presence of God.” It is a beautiful grace beyond words.
(Prayer)
Lord, the reason we praise You is not because we understand all our circumstances. Rather, it is because we believe in You. You are always good. I pray that this may be a day that walks in that faith. Amen.
