[One-Verse Meditation]

2 Samuel 5:12

“And David knew that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.”

In verse 12, David realizes that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that the reason his kingdom was exalted was not for himself, but for God’s people. This scene shows that the source of kingship lies not in human ability or political achievement, but in God. It also reveals that the king whom God appoints does not exist for his own glory, but is called to serve God’s people.

Yet this confession immediately runs into tension because of verse 13, which follows. David rightly recognized God’s purpose, but at the same time he took more concubines and wives, stepping into the way earthly kings commonly lived. This does not mean that David was a man without faith. Rather, it means that even within God’s grace, he was still a king marked by human weakness and failure. So verses 12 and 13 show that both faith and limitation were present together in David.

David certainly bears a typological resemblance to Jesus. In that he is a king established by God for the sake of God’s people, he foreshadows Christ, the true King. But David does not embody that pattern perfectly. Instead, his failure makes it all the clearer that the only true King is Jesus Christ. For he alone fully understood the meaning of being the King appointed by God, and he alone walked to the very end for the sake of the people of the kingdom of God.

We are no different. We also say that we know God’s will, yet we are easily shaken. We soon collapse. Therefore, this passage does not mean that we are to become stronger people. Rather, it carries the unspoken meaning that it exposes our limits and calls us to look to Jesus Christ, the true King. It does so in order that we may delight in Jesus Christ, who has perfectly fulfilled the will of God.

Lord, I believe that my life is upheld not by my own will or strength, but by Your goodness and righteousness. Today again, help me to look only to You and to walk according to Your will. Amen.
