[One-Verse Meditation]

2 Samuel 3:1 (NASB)

“Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David; and David became steadily stronger, while the house of Saul became steadily weaker.”

The first part of 2 Samuel 3, today’s passage for daily meditation, leaves us unsettled. David’s many wives are introduced, and Abner is rebuked by Ish-bosheth over Saul’s concubine Rizpah. We do not know for certain what really happened, but Abner uses the incident as the occasion to leave Ish-bosheth and side with David. David accepts his proposal, but with one condition: that Michal be returned to him. And so Michal, who had already become another man’s wife, is brought back to David.

None of these scenes can be taken lightly. Human desire, political calculation, and distorted relationships are all tangled together here. Yet Scripture begins this whole account with these words:

“David became steadily stronger, while the house of Saul became steadily weaker.”

We must not read this in a worldly way, as though it meant, “When a house is destined to prosper, it can do no wrong.” That is not the point. The strength and weakness spoken of here do not merely refer to human circumstances or political power. Beneath these words lies the promise of God. David is not growing stronger because he is impressive, nor because he is righteous in himself. Rather, even in the middle of a confused and broken reality, God is carrying forward His own word.

We already know what follows. These wrongs in David’s life will later become the seeds of deep sorrow and tragedy in his household. God does not call those things good. Yet neither does His promise come to a halt before human weakness. Even when human desire and calculation seem to unsettle history, it is God who is ultimately holding history in His hands.

Therefore, the words “David became steadily stronger, while the house of Saul became steadily weaker” should not be read as a celebration of David’s success, but as a confession that despite all human action, God fulfills His promise. People waver, and their steps often turn crooked, but the will of God never collapses. And so even today, the hope of the saints does not rest in human character or circumstance, but in God, who brings His own word to fulfillment in the end.

Lord, today is the time we face in which You are fulfilling Your promise. And because You will uphold my steps within that promise today as well, I will not be anxious. Even if Your way differs from my thoughts, You are always good. Amen.
