[One-Verse Meditation]

1 Samuel 25:11 (NIV) “Why should I take my bread and water, and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men coming from who knows where?”

When Saul heard David say that he was leaving his cause in the Lord’s hands, he replied, “You are more righteous than I.” He even blessed David, asking that the Lord would reward him for the good he had done. In that moment, the conflict between Saul and David seemed to come to an end. Saul’s words were moving, and he appeared resolved not to trouble David again. But it did not last. Tears are not the same as repentance.

Then Nabal enters the scene. Scripture tells us that he was very wealthy, yet harsh and evil in his dealings. His name, Nabal, means “foolishness.” This does not mean he was dull-minded or unintelligent. It points to a deeper folly—the folly of living without regard for God. That folly showed itself in his stubborn insistence on his own way and in a manner of life that ran against the Lord’s will. When David asked that food be shared with him and his men, Nabal dismissed the request at once. “Who is this David?” he said, treating him with contempt. At that, David and his men strapped on their swords.

We may wonder whether refusing to share food was really a matter worth dying over. But the setting helps us understand the weight of the moment. Sheep-shearing season was much like harvest time

r a farmer. It was a time of feasting, a time to share the blessing God had given. That is why David said, “Please give your servants and your son David whatever you can find for them.” But Nabal acted as though he himself were the master of the feast. “My bread,” “my water,” “my meat”—he spoke as though everything he had belonged to him alone. That is why Nabal was a fool.

Still, this passage shows us more than Nabal’s folly. It also reveals how quickly the human heart can reach for the sword. The contrast is striking: David had entrusted his life to God’s goodness and righteousness, while Nabal clung to what he had as though it were entirely his own. Yet this scene also calls us to examine ourselves. It exposes the clenched hand within us and the impatient heart that wants to take matters into its own hands. Where are my eyes fixed today? What am I holding on to?

Lord, You open my clenched hands so that I may hold on to You instead. You keep my life in Your hands, and there You grant a harvest far richer than anything I could secure for myself. Let me walk through this day in that grace. Amen.
