[One-Verse Meditation]

1 Samuel 23:14 (NIV) “David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hills of the Desert of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God did not give David into his hands.”

[Meditation]

If we think about today’s passage from David’s point of view, it can be summed up in one phrase: “What is going on?” David is betrayed twice by people from his own tribe of Judah. First, there is the betrayal of the people of Keilah, whom he had risked his life to save by fighting the Philistines. When David hears that Saul is coming to that place, he asks God, “Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me into his hand?” And the Lord says yes.

I risked my life to save them, yet they are willing to hand over my life in order to secure their own survival. How devastated David must have felt. The Ziphites are no different. For the sake of their own safety, they deliberately go all the way to Gibeah and tell Saul where David is hiding. And David had done nothing wrong to them.

Their response shows just how relentlessly Saul was pursuing David. Like a wild beast rushing to devour its prey, Saul came after him so fiercely that both the people of Keilah and the Ziphites could not help but be afraid. They must have thought that if they hid David, they themselves would suffer harm. Yet David is never handed over to Saul. He always escapes his grasp by one step. And Scripture clearly tells us why.

“But God did not give David into his hands.”

A believer is one who lives today trusting in this God. Even though the big and small matters of our lives may seem to be in human hands, we know that in the end they are all in God’s hands. That is why we can be bold before the world, remain at peace even on unsteady days, and wait even in frustrating seasons. The One who keeps us is God, who is greater than any human being.

[Prayer]

Lord, I am thankful that my life is not in my own hands, but in Yours. For You alone are the One who can truly be trusted. So this morning as well, I step forward in faith—not with fear, but with peace; not with anxiety, but with joy. Amen.
