[One-Verse Meditation]

1 Samuel 15:9 (NIV) But Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs—everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.

[Meditation]

Through Samuel, God gives Saul a terrifying command, one that is difficult for us to understand from today’s perspective: the complete annihilation of the Amalekites. Faced with the command to leave no one—man, woman, child, or infant—and no livestock alive, Saul’s action of sparing the best might even seem more humane. We are left bewildered before this terrible historical fact, wondering how to understand the “God of love.”

This command reveals how different God’s love is from our own ideas. The command of ‘herem’ (total destruction) is God’s self-revelation. It shows just how dreadful sin is, and how resolute is God’s ‘holy love’ in protecting His people from the contamination of sin. God saw Amalek not merely as an ‘enemy,’ but as ‘sin’ itself—a force that obstructs His history of redemption and corrupts His people. That is why He commanded its complete removal.

It is precisely before this resolute command for ‘complete annihilation’ that we see how Saul’s ‘partial obedience’ was a terrifying ‘disobedience.’ Saul destroyed what was worthless and insignificant but spared “the best.” He overlaid God’s command with his own value judgment. This was an act that directly rejected God’s sovereignty, the height of arrogance in deciding, by his own standards, what was fit to be offered to God.

This incident becomes a mirror reflecting all our acts of faith “for God” today. It causes us to reflect: Is my zeal and devotion, like Saul’s, a form of obedience that finds satisfaction in offering what I think is ‘good’ in my own way? Like Saul, who built a monument for himself at Carmel, is my ministry ultimately just building a monument for the idol called ‘me’?

[Prayer]

Lord, let me see the hidden Saul within me, and let that very recognition be the step I take toward You. Help me not to live a life that offers good things to the Lord, but one that enjoys the Lord, who is the good thing. Today, I take a step with that walk in mind. Amen.
