[One-Verse Meditation]

1 Samuel 14:24 (NIV) Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats any food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!” So none of the troops tasted food.

(Meditation)

Saul displays a great zeal. He proclaims a fast to the people, swearing an oath that anyone who eats before he has “avenged myself on my enemies” will be cursed. On the surface, it seems like devotion to God, but at the center of this oath is not “God’s enemy,” but “my enemy.” It was a dangerous zeal, not for God’s glory, but to reveal his own name and prove his own victory.

Ironically, the first victim of this self-centered oath was his own son, Jonathan. Unaware of his father’s vow, he ate some honey. Only after learning of the situation did he lament, “My father has made trouble for the land.” Within this lament lies the Lord’s rebuke against human zeal that is without God.

The tragedy born from Saul’s misguided zeal does not end there. The people, exhausted by extreme hunger, commit an even greater sin by eating meat from the plunder along with its blood. God’s holy command not to eat blood, the symbol of life, was broken because of the king’s rash command. In the end, zeal for oneself became a pathway that led the entire community into sin.

This scene poses a question to us today: “Who is at the center of the work I am so zealous about? Is my journey of faith perhaps a tool for self-satisfaction and self-expansion?” Those who walk the path of faith while asking this very question—they are the ones set apart, the holy assembly, the ‘saints’.

(Prayer)

Lord, through Saul’s example, I see my weakness to use even faith as a means for myself. This morning, shine a light on the center of my faith, that I may desire for You alone to be there. Let this be a day where my joy is found in You alone. Amen.
