[One-Verse Meditation]

1 Samuel 8:19-20 (NIV) “But the people refused to listen to Samuel. ‘No!’ they said. ‘We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.'”

Israel so easily forgets yesterday’s confession. They turn their eyes from the evidence of Ebenezer—that ‘God fought for us’—and look to the world. And they cry out, “We want a king, just like all the other nations.” They say this, wanting that king to fight their battles for them. Israel still does not truly know God. They do not know the LORD of Hosts, who has never once stopped fighting for His people.

The reason they rejected Samuel’s warning is clear: the world was visible. As the tangible power and logic of the world gripped them, their steps of faith toward the invisible God wavered. It was like walking lost in a thick fog, and their anxiety eventually erupted in a cry of unbelief: “We must have a king.” And so, they fall.

In this image of Israel, we find ourselves. We too become fearful or greedy because of the things we can see. So we wander, searching for a king to protect us, a king to fulfill us. Whether it is money, success, or people, we turn toward a world that trusts a tangible king more than the invisible God.

But God does not leave us there. With the zeal that is faithful to His promise, He eventually puts us back in our place. Despite all our wrong choices and failures, He ultimately makes us confess, “Only the LORD is my King.” To see the true King through our falling—this is grace.

[Prayer]

Lord, let me see who the king I trust and hope for is. If it is the wrong path, give me the courage to turn back; and if it is the path I ought to walk, let me richly enjoy the life you give on that path.

Lord, today I start the new day with this song: “The Lord alone is King!” Amen.
