[One-Verse Meditation]

2 Samuel 3:31 (ESV)

“Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, ‘Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth and mourn before Abner.’ And King David followed the bier.”

2 Samuel 3:31 presents a striking scene. When David hears of Abner’s death, he tells Joab and all the people with him to tear their clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. David himself also follows the bier. Abner had long stood against David as part of Saul’s house. From a worldly point of view, David could have rejoiced, or at least remained indifferent. But he does not. He truly grieves over Abner’s death.

How was David able to respond in this way? It was because the heart of God was at work in him. Had God not given him that heart, he could not have grieved so deeply over the death of an enemy. David does not begin by calculating his own advantage; he mourns over the death of a man. This is not simply David’s personal generosity. It is the heart of God, who does not deal lightly even with an enemy, being revealed through David. David is treating Abner according to that heart.

David’s mourning thus becomes a powerful testimony before all the people. Here they begin to see what kind of king David will be—not a king who removes rivals by force, but one who reveals the will of God through forgiveness and love. The heart of God within David is made visible before the people, and through that heart they are brought to see God Himself. Forgiveness and love do not remain hidden as inward feelings; they become the very character of God displayed before the community.

This is what the church is like. The church is a community that lives by a heart received from God. By our own strength, we cannot love our enemies, and by our own nature, we cannot bear loss and still forgive. But when God holds us fast and gives us the mind of Christ, His forgiveness and love begin to appear in us. That is why the Lord did not first say, “Become the salt and light of the world,” but, “You are the salt of the earth” and “You are the light of the world.” Therefore, the Christian life is not about striving to become something, but about revealing the identity the Lord has already given us. The church is the community that shines God’s love and forgiveness in the world, and you and I are saints who live that way in Christ.

Lord, I desire to abide in You by fixing my eyes on You. And by abiding in You, may Your character be revealed in me. Let me walk through this new day in that union. Amen.
