[One-Verse Meditation]

1 Samuel 29:3 (NIV)

“The commanders of the Philistines asked, ‘What about these Hebrews?’”

[Meditation]

As David and his men stood among the Philistines on the eve of battle against Israel, the Philistine commanders refused to accept them. They told King Achish not to let them go into battle, saying that David might strike them, win favor, and reconcile himself to Saul. And they had reason to think so, for David had once been their great enemy.

Scripture introduces this scene with a striking question: “What about these Hebrews?” The New Korean Translation renders it, “Why are these Hebrews here?”

That question reveals David’s identity. It brings to light the identity that even David himself had begun to lose sight of. David’s sense of who he was had become blurred, yet his enemies recognized him clearly. What an irony.

Now God leads David to live according to his true identity. He uses the judgment of the Philistine commanders to keep David from fighting against Israel. This is God’s wisdom and His goodness. It is the zeal of the One who works all things together for good.

Today’s passage calls us to reflect on our own identity. It reminds us that we are those who are in Christ.

Lord, today again You hold both my thoughts and my steps. You enable me to live as a Christian. This itself is grace. Help me to live enjoying this day as a time of grace. Amen.
