[One-Verse Meditation]
1 Samuel 23:4 (NIV) – “David inquired of the Lord again, and the Lord answered him, ‘Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand.'”
(Meditation)
While fleeing, David heard that the Philistines had attacked Keilah and plundered the threshing floors. Keilah was located in Judah, near Philistine territory. Because of its vulnerable geographical position, it frequently suffered Philistine raids. For this reason, the people of Keilah built their city like a fortress. For if this city were to fall, the other cities of Judah would soon be in danger as well.
So the Philistines plundered the threshing floors outside the city, putting the people of Keilah in dire straits. When David heard of this, he shared in their suffering. David inquired of the Lord about going out to fight against the Philistines. Following the Lord’s word that He would give the Philistines into his hand, despite the objections of those around him, David went down to Keilah. And finally, he struck down the Philistines and won a great victory.
What message does this scene convey to us? Does it speak of David’s courage and self-sacrifice—caring nothing for his own safety while saving the people of Keilah? No. This episode reveals God’s love and zeal in making David’s life a walk of faith. David, who had been tossed about by fear of Saul’s threat, who had sought the helping hand of salvation from place to place, is now established once again as God’s man.
This is the nature of our daily lives. God uses our circumstances and situations to establish us in the place of faith. He turns our gaze from the world toward the Lord. And in that place, He causes us to experience His life. Those whose stories are woven with God’s narrative upon their time are the true saints.
(Prayer)
Lord, by Your steadying hand that upholds my weakness, I stand again in the place of faith. Therefore, I confess that every step of faith I take today is by Your grace alone. Amen.
