[One-Verse Meditation]

1 Samuel 7:12 (NIV) “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the LORD has helped us.'”

‘Ebenezer’ means ‘stone of help.’ True to its name, it was a visible sign of God’s invisible help. Setting up this stone, Samuel confessed, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.” This “thus far” first points to the actual battle site between Mizpah and Shen where they defeated the Philistines. This tells us that God’s help is not an abstract comfort; it is a real power that brings victory in the fierce battles of our lives.

Furthermore, “thus far” encompasses all of Israel’s past. The name ‘Ebenezer’ appears twice in 1 Samuel. The first was a place of Israel’s shame and defeat, the very spot where they treated the ark as a talisman instead of trusting God, leading to a great loss and the capture of the ark (1 Sam. 4:1). But when Israel repented and returned at Mizpah, God transformed that very land of failure into a land of victory. That place is the scene of today’s passage.

In that place, Samuel re-proclaims the name of defeat as the name of salvation. In doing so, he testifies to the zeal of God who faithfully holds onto us despite our past faithlessness. Herein lies the grace. Because we have experienced the God who uses even past failures as stepping stones to victory, we can be confident and expect His help to continue tomorrow.

The ultimate fulfillment of this Ebenezer is accomplished in Jesus Christ. In the place of our failure, where we were defeated by sin and had no hope, God Himself set up the ‘stone of help’—and that is Jesus. His cross is the ultimate ‘Ebenezer’ for our past, present, and all eternity. Those who have experienced this truth cannot help but sing to the Lord.

O God of Ebenezer, who has helped me “thus far,” I thank you. I praise your amazing grace that uses even my failures as evidence of Your victory. Empowered by that evidence, may today be a day I vigorously sing the song of victory. Amen.
