[A Meditation on One Verse]

(Joshua 21:45) “Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.”

This is how Joshua 21 concludes: “God gave Israel all the land He had promised Abraham (v. 43), quieted all their enemies, and finally ‘gave them rest on every side’ (v. 44).”

And then follows a dazzlingly beautiful declaration. That is verse 45, our meditation for today.

The ‘good word’ reveals to us the character of God. Even in the suffering of Egypt and the harsh wilderness, God was always good. Indeed, He turned even the complaints and grumbling of faithless Israel into His good. This means that God’s goodness was directed toward Israel from the very beginning, and it was not based on their merit or condition.

In the place where that ‘good word’ was fulfilled without a single exception, what confession should Israel make? Seeing God’s goodness that was directed toward them from the start, and seeing that goodness which never stopped despite their disobedience, how should they respond? Today, you and I also face this question.

“It is finished.” (John 19:30)

For Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the good word completely, there is only one confession we can offer. It is to rejoice and delight in Him, and in doing so, to worship Him—Him, who has brought all our time to its fulfillment in goodness.

“Lord, today I begin a new day, looking to You who fulfilled the good word without exception. I begin this new day, a day filled with the goodness of Your ‘all was fulfilled.'”
