[A Meditation on One Verse]

(Joshua 11:15) “As the LORD commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.”

At the end of the long campaign to destroy all the kings of southern and northern Canaan, the Bible summarizes this entire process of victory in one sentence. The command of God was given to Moses, the command of Moses was passed to Joshua, and Joshua carried out all of it without leaving anything undone.

This verse is not meant to prove the personal greatness or piety of Moses or Joshua. For they too were people with the same nature as us, who stumble and make mistakes. Rather, this word testifies to the ‘zeal’ and power of God, who surely fulfills His promises. It shows that Israel’s true strength lies not in their swords, but in the unbreakable promise of God.

God wants us to experience Him. Because faith without experience is as fragile as a house built on sand, God made Israel experience His faithfulness with their whole being in their daily lives. ‘Ah, God truly is a promise-keeping God!’ The accumulation of this experience becomes an unshakeable faith.

It is the same with the day given to us today. This new day is a new stage that the Lord has opened for us to experience His faithfulness and goodness. Therefore, we cannot help but look forward to the ‘today’ that lies before us.

”God, thank you for giving us this blessed time today to know who You are. We begin this day, in which Your promises will be fulfilled, with this expectation.”
